Roma, Italy – May 6th We are proud and deeply moved to announce that Bruno Bozzetto has been awarded the Special David during the 71st edition of the David di Donatello Awards.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, May 6th, against the historic backdrop of Cinecittà Studios and broadcast live on Rai 1, saw the Academy of Italian Cinema pay tribute to an extraordinary career. The award was presented highlighting Bruno’s role as a cornerstone of Italian visual culture.
The Tribute at the Quirinale
The journey toward the statuette began with a moment of profound institutional significance. On the eve of the ceremony, Tuesday, May 5th, Bruno was received by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the Quirinale Palace, alongside the nominees and fellow award-winners of this edition.
During the meeting, the President emphasized that cinema represents “the path of the Republic” and is a fundamental heritage of the country. For everyone at Studio Bozzetto, receiving this tribute from the highest State authorities is a source of immense honor, confirming the enduring cultural impact of Bruno’s work on Italian society.
On Stage: Bruno’s Words
The highlight of the evening was Bruno’s acceptance speech, where he addressed the audience with his trademark humility and subtle irony. Upon accepting the David, Bruno dedicated the award to those who have accompanied him on this long creative journey.
“Receiving this award today, in this place that breathes the history of cinema, is a beautiful moment,” Bruno declared on the Cinecittà stage. He then shared a special thought for his collaborators: “Animation is never a solitary job. This David belongs to all the people at the studio—the talents who bring their unique touch and passion to our projects every day. I provide the idea, but they are the ones who give it legs to walk and a voice to speak.”
He continued with a reflection on his vision of cinema: “I have always tried to observe the world with a bit of detachment and a great deal of curiosity. Drawing has allowed me to express things I wouldn’t have known how to explain with words. I thank the Academy for recognizing that even a ‘little drawn man’ can have a soul as grand as that of a live-action actor.”
The entire staff of Studio Bozzetto gathers around Bruno in this moment of celebration. This award is not just a milestone, but an inspiration to continue telling stories with the same curiosity and innovative spirit that Bruno teaches us every day.
Thank you, Bruno!
